Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige

If you are interested in reading this book for yourself here is the amazon link.

When this book first came out, I was very interested in reading it. I am a lover of fairy tale retellings. I love imaginary worlds and I just feel like there aren’t enough books about Dorothy. Very soon after I heard a lot of debate about Danielle Paige, the author. Readers were debating on if they were going to buy the book and support it. They were stating that she used ghost writers. I had never heard of this before. It’s when an anonymous person writes a book for someone else. I really don’t completely understand. I just feel as if a story is meant to read it. So I went to target and got myself a copy. Also, is it just me or does target slap 20% off on every book. Which takes 2 dollars off, making the book the price it should already be.

So this book and many books in the series have already been out for at least a year. I decided to pick it up for the booktube-a-thon. The challenge was to pick a book that booktube made me read.

As good as this book was to me it took me three days to read. The story starts off with our main character Amy Gumm and her home life. Her father has left her and her mother. She lives in a trailer. She is also being bullied at school. The book makes the reader automatically feel sad for Amy. This particular day we find amy at home because of a tornado warning. Instead of her mother caring about her safety, she leaves her home with the pet rat. Realizing its not a drill Amy grabs the rat and burries her body into the couch as her trailer sails into the tornado.

She wakes to a beautiful man with glowing green eyes. He pulls her to safety as her trailer falls into emptiness. Realizing shes in oz Amy immediately tries to find her way home. Too bad there is no around to help her.

At this point I’m loving that the regular Wizard of Oz still exits. Amy meets a girl who is a munchkin. She informs her about how things have changed in Oz. Dorothy came back to Oz and took over. All of the characters have turned evil even the good witches. They were scared because Dorothy  beat the other witches before. Amy sees it first hand as a monkey is tortured, her munchkin friend is killed in front of her, and then she was sent to jail.

Visited by the green eyed man in jail he promises to do what he can to save her. Right before her trial Amy is visited by a witch. This is where the intensity starts. I loved how much action there was in the book. I usually don’t like it because it distracts from the romance. Speaking of romance Amy is inducted into the Wicked. Wicked is a group of people out to kill Dorothy and stop her from stealing all the magic from Oz. This is where she meets the incredible Nox. Nox is a wizard. He starts off as her trainer but becomes so much more. Honestly the romance was written so well I wouldn’t mind rereading that part. Nox and Amy started off not liking each other, but not in an obvious way that you can guess whats going to happen. I seriously ship Amy and Nox so hard. I refuse to spoil you on this.

So as I said Nox was training Amy to kill Dorothy in the battle field. The other witches were teaching her things as well. Amy became close to each person in different ways. Through it all she became stronger and learned how to use magic. Just as her training was wrapping up the lion was ordering an attack close to their hide out. This was Amy’s first battle. She did well but one of her fellow wicked ended up dying. This just made Amy want to kill Dorothy even more. The wicked had a plan for her but they weren’t sharing it.

Amy was turned into someone else and sent into the castle to observe Dorothy, and wait further instructions. After a few weeks with no word Amy was feeling abandoned. She decided to take things into her own hands. She wouldn’t watch Dorothy and her circle torment people any longer. This slip up caused terrible consequences. The wicked was forced to step in and everything changed. By the end Amy found herself fleeing the castle with the Wiz.

I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. There are so many unanswered questions. This story is so interesting and I cant wait to see the final result. I gave this book a 5/5 stars. This is my kind of book. I can’t predict what will happen next.
